Bosque Sagrado de Mijikenda Kaya

Sacred Mijikenda Kaya Forest – located 7 hours (470 km) southeast of Nairobi, this area consist of 11 separate forest sites. It is yet another 16th century phenomenon with remains of several fortified villages locally known as Kayas (formed by the Mijikenda people). The land occupies 200 km and is famed for bearing a living cultural tradition. The kayas are now regarded as abodes of ancestors, and are revered as sacred sites (for that reason, they are maintained by a local councils of elders).
